Juneteenth is the oldest, nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, announcement of the abolition of slavery and the end of the Civil War finally reached Galveston, Texas, hence the celebration of Juneteenth as Black Independence Day. Juneteenth is a national holiday and is an official holiday at Hypatia.
